Roseanne Cunningham, Cabinet Secretary for Environment, Climate Change and Land Reform within the Scottish Government, visited the University of Edinburgh on 22nd February to hear about the university's R&D activities on carbon negative options and technologies, including afforestation, peatland restoration and monitoring and biochar. Included was a visit to the biochar-producing facility (50kg per hour continuous process) which has been producing biochar from whisky draff, coffee grinds, sewage sludge / digestate and disposable drinks cups. Biochar could contribute up to 15% of the carbon abatement required by 2030 under the Government's new target of minus 66% CO2 emissions by 2030 (relative to 1990) now that the 2020 target (-42%) has been met 4 years early.
